I feel it fitting that my first blog posting in well over a year and a half be on the topic of rituals and habits. I’ve never been one to keep a consistent schedule in my life. It’s always erratic and at the whims of my creative and professional meanderings.

I actually am sitting here attending the MUSA 8th anniversary which I have, oddly (for the guy who doesn’t observe annual rituals like Christmas or Easter) consitently been in regular attendance. It feels weird to think another year has crept by and again here I am.

So what does this boil down to? Perhaps if I make it a habit to blog more I might better capture the rituals in my life. So here goes (again)…

The other night I had a dream that my apartment was littered with kittens the size of my hands. As the dream progressed puppies started showing up within the mess of kittens. I told my roommate about this dream and said that all I needed was a pony to show up and I would have officially had the dream of a four-year-old girl. My roommate then wondered what some poor four-year-old girl had dreamed that night.

Well apparently I am a fast driver. I have in the past couple of days received two tickets from New Zealand for doing 70km in a 50km zone. Yikes, these aren't cheap too! They are from my last few days driving around Northland. So as a warning to all other tourists driving around Northland watch out for the photo radar. In fact I am amazed that they tracked me down considering it appears the car rental agent spelled my street name wrong. I guess I don't technically have to pay, except that I'd like to be able to return to New Zealand some day soon. Sigh.

Today I went to my blog and saw my blog posted three times… sigh! I guess that because I am blogging from the future (my blog is run out of some place in the US) it does not show up until the present (or is that past). Global village indeed!

Just some random thoughts on the muggy walk to work today (I have the sweat stains to prove it):

I was surprised to notice an increase of walkers compared to bikers on the streets today. I guess this makes sense as those that can/will bike already normally do this on a daily basis.

The downtown core was a flood of people walking north, obviously from Union Station, which reminded me of the sea of people witnessed during the blackout.

I am reminded of a concept for a “bicycle highway” which is envisioned to run down the Don Valley and feature a 5km/hour jetstream to push bikers efficiently along. Utopic but inovative.

Those that drove were either fustrated, ticked off or not used to city driving. Case in point: I was almost run over twice at two different intersections while crossing on a green lights with little white men telling me where to go.

I just can't help putting this into the perspective of politics and consider the Conservative government's mass transit tax credit for those who buy Metropasses and such. A credit such of this is useless if the mass transit system you rely on can't afford to pay its staff and run its service for those Metropass-tax-credit-getting riders. The same money could have be given directly to the mass transit operators. Mass transit gains ridership following the “if you build it they will come” philosophy. The cost of a Metropass is still by far less expensive than owning a car and driving daily.
